I am a self taught artist who has developed a primitive half-raku, half-baked technique which adds shade and warmth to my creations. Perfection arises from fire and imperfection. My work is inspired by my research on Amerindians - their life philosophy - their rituals. I am also inspired by the beauty of nature.
My pieces are initially baked in an electric pottery oven to harden the clay. They are then decorated with coloured clay pieces and then re-baked in an outdoor kiln. When the temperature reaches 1800º F the pieces are removed from the kiln with long pliers and placed on straw. A controlled smoke reduction is done by throwing wood saw on the hot pieces until the desired effect is achieved.
My work consists of creating masks. These faces carry the energy of the people of the First Nations. A certain spirituality emerges from the source and origin. It is a journey to research my own primordial essence.
My objective is to allow an encounter, a reconciliation with our ancestors, that will contribute to an inner peace. My work is an homage to the indigenous peoples, recalling their strength, wisdom and determination in all its poetic beauty.
